MOVE Week 2024 in Malta: A community united in movement

The flagship event of the NowWeMove campaign, MOVE Week offers something for everyone – running, cycling, dancing, swimming, team sports, and much more. MOVE Week 2024 in Malta witnessed a remarkable celebration of physical activity, drawing an estimated 1,500 participants through a series of engaging events. This year's lineup aimed to highlight the mental and physical health benefits of staying active while strengthening community ties and fostering inclusivity. MCAST College hosted a half-day sports event that brought together approximately 500 students, lecturers, and staff. This dynamic gathering emphasized the importance of MOVE Week and showcased the mental and physical health benefits of regular physical activity. The campus buzzed with energy as participants enthusiastically took part in a variety of sports.
In collaboration with the Iklin Local Council, MOVE Week featured an Open Streets event, advocating for increased open spaces for physical activity. About 500 community members attended, transforming the streets into vibrant activity zones and reinforcing the value of accessible public spaces for a healthier lifestyle.
Paola hosted a special street sports event in partnership with the Malta Street Sports Association, Malta Skateboarding Association, Paola Local Council, and the Malta Trust Foundation. Around a hundred participants from challenging backgrounds joined in BMX and skateboarding activities. This event aimed to build confidence and social inclusion, providing a positive environment for these young individuals.
The Agency for Asylum Seekers (AWAS) collaborated on a youth sports session featuring street football and basketball. Around 100 young participants enjoyed the activities, which promoted physical health and community spirit. To support ongoing engagement, footballs and other sports equipment were donated.
Another amazing initiative of the week was when about 300 elderly residents from a major care home engaged in a week of specially designed games and activities. Supported by dedicated instructors and carers, the seniors participated in fun physical activities tailored to their abilities. This initiative highlighted the benefits of exercise for older adults, with many seniors actively joining in despite health challenges.
MOVE Week 2024 in Malta showcased the power of physical activity to unite communities and enhance well-being. From students to elderly residents, participants embraced the MOVE Week spirit, demonstrating that staying active promotes health and a sense of community.
