Public space and physical activity during and after Covid-19!

What are the challenges and opportunities for cities in a post-COVID reality? How can cities support safe participation in leisure, physical and sport activity in the realm of the city and public spaces? Is the fear factor something that will stop people from being physically active in public spaces? Is COVID-19 the new best promoter of physical activity? Have people's attitudes towards the everyday use of public space changed and how?

Mogens Kirkeby, ISCA President
With a Master of Science within Recreational Sport Management and Political Science, an undergraduate background in recreational sport and international experience to his credit, he acquired the position as ISCA’s Secretary General in 1998. In 2007 he was nominated by ISCA’s Danish member organisation, the Danish Gymnastics and Sports Associations (DGI), for the post of President at ISCA.

Jeff Risom, Partner and Chief Innovation Officer at Gehl – Making Cities for People, Denmark
Jeff is the Chief Innovation Officer at Gehl, leading a team dedicated to service development and applied innovation. His focus is on the relationship between human experience and design and works to apply people-first design principals to communal ecosystems, such as streets, public space, food systems, and energy. With degrees in Architectural Engineering from the US and City Design and Social Science from London School of Economics, Jeff’s multi-disciplinary background has shaped his cross-cutting holistic approach to all projects. He has worked with both public and private clients as well as non-governmental organisations in Europe, USA, Latin America, India and China.

Ramon Marrades, Placemaking Europe Board Member, Spain
Ramon is an urban economist and activist turned a creative bureaucrat and placemaker. He is currently the chief strategy officer at La Marina de València, Valencia’s waterfront redevelopment agency and a board member of Placemaking Europe and the Worldwide Network of Port Cities (AIVP). Ramon is co-editor of the book “Our City? Countering Exclusion in Public Space” (2019). His work focuses on the interface between public space and economic development.

Simon Prahm, Co-founder & CEO at GAME, Denmark
Simon is the co-founder and CEO of GAME, an international street sport NGO based in Denmark. GAME has expanded its award-winning sport for development work to Lebanon and Malta in recent years. The are 26 GAME street sport facilities in Denmark, 9 in Lebanon and 1 in Malta.

Rachel Payne, Communications Manager at ISCA, Denmark
Rachel is a journalist and academic with a PhD in sports journalism. As well as being ISCA's Communications Manager, she has worked as a writer and editor for newspapers, academic journals and magazines, and as an English language advisor to academics, think tanks Mandag Morgen and Think Tank EUROPA, Anti-Doping Denmark and other non-profit organisations in Denmark.

What will the "new normal" look like for sports clubs and indoor fitness venues during and after the COVID-19 crisis?

Four expert speakers from the Czech Republic, Denmark, Slovenia and Spain joined our virtual panel and shared how their sports club, fitness centre, university sport organisation and street sport NGO have responded to the COVID-19 crisis.

We explored the answers to burning questions for our sector:

  • How can you plan, decide on and implement new programmes?
  • How should you re-train and lead your team into the future?
  • How can we build a feeling of safety and trust in members and customers?

Patrik contributes to the development of Slovenian university sport as a member, vice-president and president of the National University Sport Association and leads the University Sport Commission at Slovenian Rectors Conference.

Mikkel Selmar, Head of Facilities, GAME, Denmark
GAME is a Danish NGO founded in 2002 with a mission to create lasting social change through youth-led street sports and culture.

Martin Chlumsky, Member of the Board, Czech Sokol Organisation, Czech Republic
Martin is the Director of Central Sokol School, and Advisor/Student Exchange Program Coordinator for Gerlev Sports Academy, Denmark.
