MOVE Week has the solution against the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality!

15/05/2018

The Special Eurobarometer report reveals new important statistics concerning European physical activity and inactivity levels, and how MOVE Week has found an answer to the problem.

The newly released Special Eurobarometer report gives new and updated insight into the ongoing situation we are have concerning sport and physical activity in Europe. The March publication had one very clear message within it: There has to be more done in order to tackle the inactivity crisis, not only in Europe, but all around the world!

As the report shows, 46% of all Europeans never exercise at all, and 14% engage only rarely in physical activity. That in turn means that 60% of people living in the EU - which is over 300 million Europeans in real numbers – never, or hardly ever, engage in physical activity or play sports. These numbers are alarming. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality. Regular physical activity has proven to have numerous positive effects on physical health, mental health and social integration.

Tibor Navracsics, Commissioner for Education, Youth, Culture and Sport, states:
"The new figures show how vitally important it is to continue our efforts to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyles. I strongly encourage all actors, from public authorities to sports organisations, to intensify their efforts and work together."

This call to action is addressed to everybody who cares in any way about sport, physical activity, health and wellbeing, but this is of special importance to the International Sport and Culture Association (ISCA). The organisations explicit responsibility and mission is to get more people around the world moving and engaging in physical activity.

For that and many more reasons the International Sport and Culture Association introduced the NowWeMOVE-Campaign with its flagship event MOVE Week.

MOVE Week consists of seven days of sport and activities that anyone can try for free, so you can find the type of movement that suits you best and start living a more active life. There is no special target group, the aim is to get as many people moving and active as possible, no matter if it’s children, women, people with disabilities or elderly adults. Everybody is welcome to join!

MOVE Week promotes the benefits of being active and participating regularly in sport and physical activity throughout the world.

This large scale event is only possible through the support of a wide range of more than 6000 promoters of physical activity, who we call MOVE Agents. They participate on a completely voluntary basis and over 82% of them state that they are promoting sport and organising physical activity events in order to improve health and wellbeing in their communities.

If you would like to organise an event of your own, become a MOVE Agent and join us by helping to make the world healthier and more active!
